Martin Howell

Associate Principal, ARUP

Martin Howell is an Associate Principal and sustainability leader at Arup, where he specializes in sustainable design, energy strategy, decarbonization, and high-performance buildings. Based in Los Angeles, Howell has more than three decades of experience in mechanical engineering, energy planning, and sustainability consulting across complex projects in the built environment. He is recognized for helping organizations integrate low-carbon and resource-efficient solutions into large-scale developments and infrastructure projects. Howell joined Arup in the United Kingdom in 1990 as a mechanical engineer and later relocated to the United States in 2002. Throughout his career, he has focused on applying sustainable and low-energy principles to traditionally energy-intensive facilities, including laboratories, data centers, and commercial buildings. His expertise includes sustainability frameworks, energy modeling, building performance optimization, electrification, and climate-responsive design. At Arup, Howell has played a leadership role in advancing sustainability strategy and implementation across projects in California and internationally. He has contributed to the development of sustainability guidelines, rating system integration, and portfolio decarbonization initiatives, particularly in the hospitality and commercial real estate sectors. He is also an active mentor and educator, frequently engaging with architecture and engineering students on sustainable design and interdisciplinary collaboration.In addition to his professional work, Howell has supported community and environmental organizations including Habitat for Humanity, Heal the Bay, and the Los Angeles Food Bank. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Building Services Engineering from the University of Northumbria in Newcastle, England, and is a LEED Accredited Professional and Certified Energy Manager.
