Nick Melvoin

Board Member, District 4, Los Angeles Unified School District

Nick Melvoin is a public education leader, attorney, and policymaker serving on the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education, where he represents Board District 4. First elected in 2017 and re-elected in 2022, Melvoin oversees educational policy and governance for one of the nation’s largest public school systems, serving students and families across a broad region of Los Angeles including the Westside, Hollywood, the San Fernando Valley, and surrounding communities. Throughout his tenure on the Board, Melvoin has focused on expanding educational equity, improving student wellness, modernizing school infrastructure, and strengthening college and career readiness programs. He has been a leading advocate for initiatives related to mental health services, arts education, climate resilience, early childhood education, and workforce development, while also supporting efforts to improve student outcomes through innovation and community partnerships. Melvoin has played a significant role in advancing sustainability initiatives within LAUSD, including efforts to electrify school bus fleets, expand green school infrastructure, improve energy efficiency, and strengthen climate education programs. He has also supported district investments in broadband access, technology modernization, and public health infrastructure in response to evolving student and community needs. Before joining the Board of Education, Melvoin worked as a public school teacher, attorney, and education advocate. He previously served as Deputy Director of Public Affairs for Teach For America Los Angeles and later practiced education law and public interest litigation. His background in both classroom instruction and legal advocacy has informed his collaborative and student-centered approach to governance.
