Mayor-elect Nithya Raman inherits a Los Angeles full of promise and burdened by challenges
VX News here republishes a CalMatters commentary by Jim Newton on Councilmember Nithya Raman’s defeat of Mayor Karen Bass. Newton traces Bass’s loss to the fallout from the Palisades and Eaton fires and an unfavorable national climate for incumbents. He then outlines what awaits the mayor-elect: homelessness, where she has pledged a 50% cut in street homelessness within two years; housing affordability; the 2028 Olympics; and a contested promise to replace LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell.
